Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, México.
New Year's Eve is so much more than just a night with a fireworks show. It is a time of wonder, magic, and traditions. Depending on where you are from, celebrations and food may vary, as one thing is for certain: Each country has its unique and special way to celebrate this time that marks the beginning of a new opportunity to achieve our dreams.
If you are a traveler who searches for wonder, you'd better read this blog, as we will explore how countries like Japan and Mexico celebrate the New Year!

During the new year, families usually clean their homes, place traditional decorations like kadomatsu, and enjoy dishes such as osechi ryōri and mochi. They also visit temples and shrines for hatsumōde, the first prayer of the year, while Buddhist temples ring their bells 108 times at midnight to cleanse worldly desires and start the year with a pure spirit.
Here, New Year’s Eve is a mix of family time, food, and fun rituals. A popular tradition is eating twelve grapes at midnight, one for each month of the coming year, making a wish with each one. Many families also carry a suitcase around the block to attract a year filled with travel and adventure!
It is such a unique tradition! The first person to enter a home after midnight becomes the “first footer” and is set to bring good fortune for the year. This person arrives with gifts like coal, shortbread, or whisky.

At Villa del Palmar, the New Year Celebration is something we hold dear to our hearts. Each year, we celebrate with a buffet dinner and open bar. But that is just the beginning of the night, as the new year comes closer, a theme show (which will stay a secret!) takes place and sets the mood for the fireworks display that will mark the start of 2026!
Make sure to book your stay in advance! This is a popular event, and we wouldn't like to hear that you missed it because you waited too long to reserve!
